This novel is set in a small town in the King Country in the nineteen-twenties. The characters are the everyday people who make up such small communities, and include Maori and Yugoslavs. Everyone in the town has some responsibility for the unwanted child, Bethell, neglected by her father and mother, and all fail her except the humble, despised, old Maori, Georgie Wi.
