Paperback reissue of an account of the voyage of the migrant ship, the Derma, in 1948. First published 2001. Using passengers' personal recollections, documents and artefacts from the voyage, the author traces the conflicts and relations between the culturally and politically diverse passengers aboard the crowded ship. She highlights the below-standard physical conditions aboard the vessel, which fuelled the onboard tension and traces their new lives ashore in Australia and New Zealand. Includes a passenger list, bibliography, note from the author and epilogue. Armstrong's first book, 'Mosaic: A Chronicle of Five Generations', was short-listed for the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Non-fiction and the National Biography Award.
